The Goerne Cup
The Goerne Cup is a memorial tournament honoring Michael Goerne, a driven individual and dedicated lacrosse player who suddenly and tragically lost his life in February 2019 at age 37.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Michael found and fell in love with the game of lacrosse. Determined to share his love of the sport, he founded the Edina High School lacrosse team turning it from a club sport with borrowed hockey gear to a varsity sport before graduation.
Michael continued his lacrosse journey at Marist College in New York, playing four years of D1 lacrosse before heading to the Roaring Fork Valley in Colorado.
After joining the men’s lacrosse club in Aspen, Mike began recruiting players to coach his youth lacrosse camps and established a new club team at Aspen High School. His commitment to the game and the players he coached led him to finish his High School Coaching career with a state championship for the Aspen Skiers in 2015.
Michael continued to grow the youth club to become one of the biggest in the area. Goerne Grows the Game (G3) was established to continue his legacy of ensuring all who want to play are able through gifting equipment for boys and girls.
When he wasn’t on the lacrosse pitch, he was racing motorcross, camping, hunting, hiking, skiing, playing hockey, and so much more. He was an avid outdoorsman and athlete.
When you come to Aspen, play the game remembering his contributions to the sport and the words and actions he lived by to "Do what you love, and do it often."
